On Reunion Island, you are in Europe. Citizens of the European Union normally don't need more documents and health protection than for a stay in France. But in order to be on the safe side, take your passport with you as a replacement document, and check with your ministry of foreign affairs.
The quality of medical services is the same as in continental France.
On Reunion Island it is preferable to change accommodation after a few days for getting to know the different parts of the island more intensively and to avoid time-consuming journeys. The distances and travel times on our relatively small island are often underestimated.
On the coast you only need summer clothes, but it can get quite cold in winter on the higher mountains. The seasons are opposite to those of the northern hemisphere. Reunion Island's time is 2 hours ahead of that of Central Europe (3 hours in our summer).
Local landline numbers are as follows: 0262-111111, mobile phone numbers: 0692(or ...3)-528378.
The national prefix is, different from the french one: +262.
So, from foreign countries or from your mobile phone you must dial for example: +262-262-111111. You pay the innereuropean charges, for calls and internet connections. If you are not an European citizen it may be less expensive if you buy a local SIM card, for example with ORANGE, SFR or FREE.
Internet connections are generally quite good, most restaurants, hotels etc. offer free WIFI connection.
You should absolutely bring suitable rain gear and protection against sun and mosquitoes.
In fact, all of these precautions depend largely on the location and season of your stay.
For more peace of mind and a more personalized service, try to avoid the school holidays in mainland France and Reunion Island and the months of October and early November. June or early September are ideal months for a trip to Reunion, especially for hiking.
If you would like to rent camping or hiking equipment locally contact Lokanoo.
We would be happy to give you advice on how to organize your stay, or to plan and/or organize your individual stay in the Indian Ocean.
